Alcohol Is Not Fattening, But…

alcohol

Holidays and celebrations are there to be enjoyed, but it can also be quite a challenge to start or maintain a healthy lifestyle during these times.

Alcohol seems to go hand in hand with most celebrations and believe it or not,it isn’t technically fattening, like sugar would be. The vast majority of alcoholics are skinny. However, alcohol will still get in the way of weight loss.

When you drink alcohol, the lipase enzyme is destroyed. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down the fat in your body. Without it, it is impossible to lose weight. The effects of alcohol remain in the body for at least 24 hours, meaning, your body will be unable to burn any fat during that time.

Alcohol also has another devastating effect on the body – it’s dehydrating! In other words, it reduces the amount of water within the body. Have you ever seen how frequently people in a bar go to the bathroom? Anything that reduces body hydration will reduce the metabolism, and anything that reduces the metabolism, will lead to weight problems. In short, drinking alcohol will not help your efforts to slim down.

However, should you find yourself in a situation where you’re going to have an alcoholic beverage, the trick is to make sure you hydrate your body before and after the time that you drink. My suggestion is to consume at least 16 ounces of water before you drink and another 16 ounces of water when you are done drinking. In this way, you’ll reduce the damage that alcohol causes to your body, at least in terms of hydration.
